See My Art, Inc. (SMART) is a not-for-profit corporation that inspires, empowers, validates, and supports people with disabilities through art. Co-founded in 2012 by artist and art therapist Sara Balbin, SMART seeks to open doors and unlock minds by providing public venues for displaying art by individuals with disabilities, and by educating the public about the health benefits of artistic expression.  The community keeps SMART strong by getting to know our artists at Community Events. Please visit www.seemyart.us and Facebook page to view the artist’s works and activities.

Kitt Anderson

“I was born with Ataxia, but not diagnosed until I was fifteen at the Weisskopf Child Evaluation Center, Louisville Kentucky, and was not expected to live past the age of 27. I’m now 34 years old and living a productive creative life in the Hayward community.

I had a set back a few years ago because of a bicycle accident. However, it has not stopped me from being a productive artist and continuing with my responsibilities as a Senior Member of the Hayward Civil Air Patrol. Thank you to the Hayward Community Library for the opportunity to show my watercolor paintings.”

Annika Thompson

When Annika was six years old the doctor thought she had Lyme Disease. She was losing weight, she stopped growing and her eyes became sensitive to light. Her parents took her to the University of Minnesota where doctors told them Annika had a brain tumor on her optic nerve.

“While on the operating table I had a stroke and was paralyzed on my right side. I was told I couldn’t walk again and was fitted for a wheelchair. Through therapy I relearned to walk, talk, eat and do everything with my left hand.”

Annika’s artistic passion is in drawing and painting. The subject matter of her work is eclectic and includes sports, wildlife, plants, and landscapes.
